LLED 462 - Libraries as Spaces of Learning

Image
The Library Learning Commons is a "student centered learning environment." (UBC, Module 10) The space inside of the library will take on many forms it will be virtual, flexible and inviting. The job of the teacher librarian is to take steps to create this space. This is because we as teacher-librarians have the ability to create an empowering and safe space for all library users. This means working in tandem with classroom teachers to meet the varying needs of our student population. At the end of the day when I look at the library I work in I always remind myself that it is "everyone's classroom." (UBC, Module 7) The students needs and interests come first and I will do my part to be flexible and provide help to any classroom teacher that requires my assistance.  By utilizing multimodal and design opportunities my goal is to allow students to explore their learning styles and create ways for discussions to happen in both the physical and digital space connect...

Reflection: Vision of the Future

Image
Ms. Zmukic & Basil  At the beginning oft this term I mentioned how the idea of inquiry made me uncomfortable yet it was what I wanted to explore. I had a lot of opportunity to learn and talk about inquiry during my LLED 469 class at the same time the learning and exploration done through LIBE 447 has helped me solidify my understanding of inquiry. Looking back at the process I recognize that we were given a lot of time to explore and learn on our own. I think this is vital because as teacher's and teacher-librarians no one is holding us to accountable to keep learning. However, to be successful in those roles it is necessary to become someone who views themselves as a life-long learner. As someone who naturally loves learning and has always identified as being a good student I recognize that I am privileged that the way school is structured works for me. However, as an educator I want to be able to make sure that the way I teach is able to meet the needs of my di...

Vision of the Future

At the beginning of this class my mind was buzzing with ideas. I has also just been offered a position as a Library and would be starting in September. This meant I had to have it all figured out right? I had to walk in there be ready to teach, curate and collaborate. I was excited, but also nervous. So I decided to help calm my nerves I would focus on what I was excited about focused on what I was excited about, things that I loved to which include collaborating and building resources.  In my initial two blog posts Reading Review A and Reading Review B . I mentioned how digital literacy and information literacy have become so important and vital to our students. As Richardson states  "The world has changed — and continues changing — rapidly and radically when it comes to the ways in which we can learn, and what knowledge, skills, dispositions, and forms of literacy our children will need to flourish in their futures." (p. 53). As internet use be...

Going Mobile

Image
Question: How can mobile devices help libraries, both in developed and developing nations? Your task this week is to explore online and learn about specific library projects in a developing nation. How are they creating new literacy opportunities and expanding access to the internet and information databases? How can they best move forward to support the local needs of their communities? Also explore how mobile devices might assist in this endeavour and what new affordances they bring to the developing world that will allow them to provide greater and more democratic access to information, unfiltered and uncensored? Access to technology is a privileges but access to information is a human right.     Looking at my 738 sq ft apartment I recognize how even in a small space it's filled with technology. Between my partner and I there are 2 iphones, 1 laptop, 1 ipad, 2 desktop computers, a televisions, and multiple video game systems. It would not be a far reach to say that ou...
